Constant change and a tiny step.

Finally a breathing space, realization during these period is that changes are constant , changes never change.  Little steps taken for a healthy environment can also make a better difference. Milk packets:          Recently I came across few articles and posts , that opening the milk packets without cutting off the tip  and just having a slit without separating  the small piece can reduce the number of small plastics entering the soil which never gets decomposed. Karnataka has encouraged citizens in this method. This can be used in any plastic covers we use in our day to day lives.           I hope we could implement this small step.            Comment on if you got any more ideas

Why watermelon rind is used in making of bioplastics?

Watermelon is great fruit, colorful and tasty. We enjoy the red part of the fruit and do throw out the rind. A researcher in his paper mentioned that watermelon rind has a PHA of 12.7g/L. PHA is a powerful raw material for bioplastics. It is a source of rich carbohydrates of 48.7 % and proteins of 13.5%.

A polysaccharide extracted from watermelon rind was studied showing antioxidant antihypertensive properties. Other compounds in watermelon rind are Galactose, Arabinose, Glucose, Galacturonic acid, Mannose, Rhamnose, Xylose, Glucuronic acid. Simple making of bioplastics at houses uses watermelon rind with starch, mold, and Oven as the basic requirements. Also, watermelon rinds are a rich source of nutrients for composting.

Many companies are aiming at watermelon rinds as a source of raw materials for bioplastics in packaging. Beverage industries are planning to keep a step ahead in these fruit waste depended on bioplastics for bottles than making use of synthetic ones.

Watermelon rinds also include significant properties including a good source of fiber, antioxidants, maintains good blood circulation, etc. So next time you have a watermelon rind, the minimum we could benefit from that is proper composting.
