Constant change and a tiny step.

Finally a breathing space, realization during these period is that changes are constant , changes never change.  Little steps taken for a healthy environment can also make a better difference. Milk packets:          Recently I came across few articles and posts , that opening the milk packets without cutting off the tip  and just having a slit without separating  the small piece can reduce the number of small plastics entering the soil which never gets decomposed. Karnataka has encouraged citizens in this method. This can be used in any plastic covers we use in our day to day lives.           I hope we could implement this small step.            Comment on if you got any more ideas

Are Rubber Bands any good?

With the increase in awareness of Eco-friendly and Sustainable lifestyles, people start questioning their everyday products with more concern about how they impact our health and eco-system. We could identify an increase in interests of people over Vegan products for everyday make-ups to eco-friendly products. Yet we are just taking baby steps, a point not to be forgotten.

One common product that was brought to attention is Rubber bands. Rubberbands are overused in our daily lives.  Have we ever thought about how friendly are they? Rubber products are basically categorized as Natural and Synthetic products. Rubber bands commonly used are natural products because of their good elastic nature. They are the product of rubber tree latex.

How long do they take to decompose?

In general, rubber bands are decomposable and takes 1-50 years according to various literature for decomposing depending on their materials and manufacturing types.

How Friendly are they to the wild?

Several articles speak about how birds mistook rubberbands for worms and had fed them to young chicks.  Examples are Great black-backed gulls, Herring gulls. Other cases like animals choking on rubber bands, sea animals feeding on rubber bands have also been recorded. These are the results of a lack of human knowledge on proper disposals.

How to dispose of Rubber bands?

Before planning about proper disposal, try surfing about creative artworks using rubber bands like wall art. Proper segregation of rubber bands is highly recommended. They have to be segregated, labeled, and sent to recycling units. Simply disposing of in trash bin can end up in landfills and ocean affecting eco-system.

Points to Ponder:

  • Rubber bands are degradable but it takes a very long time.
  • It can affect wildlife when disposed of carelessly.
