Bioplastics and Types
We know that Bioplastics are an eco-friendly alternative for plastics but they have types- Do you know that? Bioplastic has important properties like bio-based, renewable, and biodegradable. The primary choices are corn starch others include vegetable fat, tapioca, milk, etc
CLASSIFICATION:
1. Bio-based and non-biodegradable:
These are eye washing formulation containing PolyEthylene mixture of regular
and plant-based at 7: 3 ratio.
2. Bio-based and
biodegradable: Single used plastics made from Poly Lactic Acid, Poly
Hydroxyalkanoate, and other degradable materials.
KNOW THE TYPES:
- Starch base: Corn starch, potato starch,
and biodegradable polyesters mixed. More cost-efficient. 50% of the global
bioplastic market is starch-based.
- Cellulose base: Cellulose esters and
derivatives. These are water-resistant.
- Protein base: Protein sources such as
gluten, wheat, etc.
- Aliphatic polyester: PHA, PHB, PHV, PHH,
PLA
- Organic polyethylene: Raw material like
corn starch, sugarcane are fermented
INVENTIONS:
In
search of new raw materials, scientists ended up finding algae to be a bright
future. These algae sources are yet classified as Plant and animal sources for
using lipids, fats, starch, and protein; use of triglycerides and lactic acids
grouped as polymerizable molecules from renewable sources.
